Shadow is a demon that has grown resisent to sword attacks until his core is revealed, so basically you have to fire at him until he opens his core than go at it with a sword requiring both attacks to kill it. Once you have succeeded in killing it, it will start to explode so jump back. Some people wait until Shadow launches his spear attack an then stand on it and fire away. Shadow is just made up of dark magic evil.
